about Martial Arts

Martial arts are codified systems and traditions of combat practiced for a number of reasons such as self-defense, competition; physical, mental, and spiritual development, entertainment, and the preservation of a nation’s intangible cultural heritage.

Although the term MARTIAL ARTS has become associated with the fighting arts of East Asia, it originally referred to the combat systems of Europe as early as the 1550s. The term is derived from Latin and means “arts of Mars”, the Roman god of war. Some authors have argued that fighting arts or fighting systems would be more appropriate on the basis that many martial arts were never “martial” in the sense of being used or created by professional warriors.

There’s many styles of martial arts, and each one got a name, there are styles that uses kicks more then punches and grappling like Taekwondo and that’s the style that our academy if specialised in of course we mix it with other styles as well; there are styles that focus on using hands like western boxing and wing chun; those are the striking styles, we have other styles that focus on grappling and ground fighting like Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jutsu; and of course there is the armed styles that they use swords, sticks and other weapons.

So Taekwondo, Karate, Kung Fu, Muay Thai, KravMaga and many others are from the Martial Arts family and each one has different style, derived from different cultures and obviously was invented thousands years ago and used for military purposes at a time when weapons was not effective as nowadays, but armies still train martial arts nowadays for its benefits like self-defense, self-confidence, fitness and other benefits.

When we say Martial Art or when we mention any style like Taekwondo, Karate or Kung Fu we know from their names that they come from east Asia, but the real origin of Martial Art in my opinion is from many places and not just one area, but maybe it was developed in a proper way in East of Asia, we have many other old Martial Arts and not just the hybrid ones that come from countries far from east of Asia.

About Taekwondo

Taekwondo, Tae Kwon Do or Taekwon-Do is a Korean martial art, characterized by its emphasis on head-height kicks, jumping spinning kicks, and fast kicking techniques with kicks and striking being above waist height only.

Taekwondo is the most popular martial art in the world

The oldest governing body for Taekwondo is the Korea Taekwondo Association (KTA), formed in 1959 through a collaborative effort by representatives from the nine original kwans, or martial arts schools, in Korea. The main international organisational bodies for Taekwondo today are the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF), founded by Choi Hong Hi in 1966, and the partnership of the Kukkiwon and World Taekwondo (WT, formerly WTF), founded in 1972 and 1973 respectively by the Korea Taekwondo Association based in South Korea.
